Some newborns survive everything else and still can’t be fed. Whether it’s a premature baby whose course is finally going well, until necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) suddenly hits; or a baby born with gastroschisis whose intestine spent months developing outside the body and never quite works despite being structurally repaired at birth. These babies share a similar underlying problem: the mechanical forces required to build a working gut were interrupted at the moment they mattered most.
As a clinician and a scientist, I directly care for and manage these babies in the NICU at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, while running a basic/translational research program asking why and how it keeps happening.
As Associate Program Director for Scholarly Oversight in the UC Davis Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship, I help build the structures that support fellows’ scholarly pursuits to gain the skills they need to become excellent neonatologists whether their path leads to a laboratory, a clinical trial, quality improvement or education.
I mentor undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows and doctoral candidates, and co-founded the Physician-Scientist Peer Group at the UC Davis School of Medicine for faculty carrying research and clinical demands because the pipelines can’t end before the real work begins.
